Bridge Program Internship

Learn more about the Bridge Program Internship!

HASA follows a rigorous process to ensure that our interpreter interns are well-prepared and appropriately placed on jobs. We understand the importance of providing a quality experience for both our interns and the individuals they serve. Here’s an overview of our placement process:

  1. Application and Screening:

Interns interested in joining our program are required to submit a comprehensive application, including their resume, education background, certifications, and a statement of intent. We carefully review each application, assessing the candidate’s qualifications, skills, and commitment to the field of interpreting.

  1. Interview and Assessment:

Next, candidates are invited for an interview, either in-person or via video conference. During the interview, we assess their ASL skills, interpreting abilities, cultural competency, and their understanding of ethical standards. We may also request them to provide samples of their interpreting work or complete a skills assessment exercise.

  1. Orientation and Training:

Once selected, interns undergo an orientation session where they learn about our agency’s policies, procedures, and expectations. They receive training on our specific interpreting protocols, confidentiality, and professional conduct. We also provide ongoing training opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge throughout their internship.

  1. Mentorship and Supervision:

Each intern is assigned a mentor, an experienced interpreter who guides and supports them throughout their internship. The mentor provides feedback, assists with skill development, and helps interns navigate the challenges they may encounter on the job. Regular check-ins and evaluations ensure interns receive the necessary guidance and support.

  1. Job Placement:

When assigning interns to jobs, we carefully consider their skill level, experience, and the specific requirements of the assignment. We aim to provide a diverse range of experiences, exposing interns to various settings such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, community events, and more. We prioritize matching interns with appropriate assignments to ensure their growth and success.

  1. Ongoing Evaluation:

Throughout their internship, interns are evaluated on their performance, professionalism, and adherence to ethical standards. These evaluations help us assess their progress, identify areas for improvement, and provide constructive feedback. This continuous evaluation process ensures interns receive the necessary guidance to develop into competent and confident interpreters.

By following this rigorous process, we aim to provide our interpreter interns with a comprehensive and valuable learning experience. We strive to ensure that they are well-prepared to meet the needs of the Deaf community and contribute positively to the interpreting profession.
