Better Hearing and Speech Month: Connecting People

Communication is how we connect to our world. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), approximately 37.5 million U.S. adults report some trouble hearing.  Every May, the American-Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) raises awareness about hearing and communication by celebrating Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM). The theme for 2022 is “Connecting People.” Consequently, raising awareness helps the 7.5 million Americans who have challenges using their voice and experiencing speech disorders.  Better hearing and speech awareness starts with you.  How can you help? Read our blog for tips for protecting your own hearing, becoming informed, and helping the community.

Wear Hearing Protection

Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common types of hearing loss. You may not realize it, but you are likely exposed to dangerously loud sounds at times.  Any sound over 85 decibels can be harmful to your hearing, leading to hearing loss. This includes live music, fireworks, lawnmowers, motorcycles, and power tools. It’s crucial to wear hearing protection such as earplugs to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

Schedule Annual Hearing Exams

It’s important to have your hearing checked regularly, just like you visit a doctor every year or go to the dentist. We can test your hearing and identify any changes in your hearing. Moreover, the earlier changes in hearing are detected, the more proactive you can be. You can schedule your test online.

Educate Yourself

There is a lot to learn about hearing loss and communication disorders. In order to normalize and decrease the stigma surrounding hearing loss, it is important to spread awareness. For example, there are plenty of resources online that can help you get started. You can read the HASA blog, or follow us on social media.
