Baltimore, Md. – October 29, 2007 — On November 7, The Hearing and Speech Agency (HASA) will launch its first annual Shiela Applestein Memorial Lecture Series and Award Ceremony for outstanding contributions in the field of early education intervention. The inaugural event will honor Dr. Rebecca Landa, a nationally recognized pioneer and researcher in the early detection and treatment of autism.
The lecture series and award ceremony are made possible through the Shiela Applestein Memorial Fund. Applestein was a speech-language pathologist at HASA, who strongly believed in the importance of early intervention. Her Memorial Fund serves to continually educate individuals and professionals about the importance of early intervention, to create awareness for the issue of early intervention, and to honor those who are making a significant difference in the field.
Olga Polites, clinical services director of HASA stated, “Dr. Landa is an exemplary person to honor in memory of Shiela. Dr. Landa has an abundance of knowledge in the exceedingly prevalent issue of autism. With 1 out of every 166 children being diagnosed, early intervention is paramount, and Dr. Landa has proven to be a foremost authority in the early diagnosis and treatment of the disorder.”
Polites, who sits on the Baltimore Infants and Toddlers Program—Autism Task Force with Landa was instrumental in the decision to honor her at the inaugural lecture series at HASA. Event details follow:
